(United Press International Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) U.S. company Lockheed Martin has awarded a follow-on contract to Symetrics Industries to support A-10 aircraft with additional modem technologies.
Symetrics announced it received the follow-on award to deliver its mini-Improved Data Modems. Under the approximately $1 million deal, Symetrics says its mini-IMD technologies will go to support the A-10 close air support fighter jet's Precision Engagement modification.
Officials say the Symetrics mini-IDMs are part of the retrofit for the Air Force's entire A-10 fleet which includes almost 360 aircraft.
"We are adding new technology like variable message format close air support messages to a legacy platform, giving it a new, lethal capability," Rick Snyder, Symetrics Advanced Programs senior vice president, said in a statement.
"With this addition the A-10 will be able to receive portable graymap quality coordinates from a forward air controller and execute air strikes." Copyright 2009 by United Press International
