Toronto, Canada – GAO Research Inc. has launched its economical, flexible and reliable Soft-modem for Set-Top Boxes (STB). The soft-modems are designed to be compliant with specific ITU-T standards and yield comparable reliability and quality to traditional hardware modem chipsets. GAO’s soft-modems run on a DSP or microprocessor along with other control software and require an analog front-end.
GAO’s modular, re-locatable and reentrant soft-modems support multi-channel capability and improved for all common embedded hardware platforms. They are operating within a multi-tasking environment or as a stand-alone task and are optimized for fixed-point arithmetic. They support most commercial analog front ends (AFE) as well as various discrete DAAs with codes, depending on the application.
GAO’s soft-modems are the ideal solution for satellite STB units. The lower speed modems, using V.22 or V.22bis standards, provide a speedy hand-shaking process and a sufficient bit rate to complete the typical data transaction requiring relative low bandwidth within seconds. The higher-speed modems including V.34, V.90 and V.92, have maximum downstream data rates of 33.6kbps, 48kbps and 56kbps respectively. These high-speed modems are suitable for the transfer of data for interactive STB applications that require real-time response such as interactive gaming and Internet/email/IM access.
GAO’s high-speed soft-modems are typically deployed in high-end satellite STBs in order to support advanced interactive features, to meet desirable response times and higher bit rates..
