How to verify a dial tone

Verifying a dial tone is not as difficult as it sounds. Just follow these simple steps to verify that you have a dial tone to enable your dial up modem to connect you to the Internet.

Instructions

1. Step 1

   Locate the incoming wire. This wire leads from the telephone jack to the back of the computer or into the "Line In" on your surge protector.

2. Step 2

   Unplug the line and plug it into the telephone.

3. Step 3

   To verify that you have a dial tone, hold the phone up to your ear and listen. It will be a continuous tone.

4. Step 4

   Unplug the wire from the telephone and replace it either in the back of your computer or into the "Line In" in the surge protector.

5. Step 5

   You will now be able to access the Internet via a dial-up modem in the computer.
