Improve Your Wireless Devices' Reception with a USB Hub

Improve Your Wireless Devices' Reception with a USB Hub
As more and more peripherals—like your keyboard and mouse—go wireless, your cable management problems may end up giving way to reception problems. Tech blog Tested says moving your wireless dongles to a dedicated USB hub can do wonders for that reception.
Why move your stuff to a cheap, dedicated multi-port USB hub rather than keeping them plugged into the tangled hell behind your desk?
Placing your wireless dongles in an open space means better reception and transmission range for keyboards and mice, and has the added bonus of making your dongles easier to manage and troubleshoot.
Sounds good to us. If you don't have much in the way of wireless dongles and you do have USB inputs on existing gear—like your monitor or even keyboard—you can always use those as your free-from-interference hubs as well. But it's a good piece of advice to keep in mind if you're having trouble with your wireless gear.

WLAN VoIP router offers 3G USB modem support

Broadcom Corp. is rolling out the Intensi-fi XLR WLAN VoIP router SoC platform solutions with enhanced features that include 3G support. System OEMs can now leverage Broadcom wireless silicon integration and a proven VoIP software suite to develop advanced routers. 3G functionality can be added to these new platform solutions using a USB interface, bringing Internet and network services to homes where broadband is otherwise unavailable.3G USB modems enable consumers to utilize their cellular network to create an instant Wi-Fi hotspot for whole home Internet and VoIP services. According to InStat, revenues from external 3G modems alone will reach $2.34 billion globally by the end of 2010.
Running a VoIP stack on the wireless router enables consumers to make high quality phone calls over the Internet. VoIP routers bring cost benefits to consumers since calls are charged as part of the Internet service instead of a separate regular telephone charge. Added services like multiple lines, conference call and caller ID are also provided at no additional charge as part of typical VoIP offerings.
Broadcom's 802.11n design platform with external 3G support includes router options for low-end to high-end solutions as follows:
• BCM5356U—single-stream 2.4GHz IEEE 802.11n router SoC solution
• BCM5358U—dual-stream 2.4GHz IEEE 802.11n router SoC solution
• BCM5358—a dual-stream 2.4GHz IEEE 802.11n router SoC solution with VoIP support
• BCM47186—dual-stream 2.4GHz IEEE 802.11n high-performance Gigabit Ethernet router SoC solution with VoIP support
To provide a strong wireless backbone for the networked home, Broadcom optimized this new 802.11n router platform with Accelerange technology—a unique set of hardware and software enhancements that ensures more robust wireless coverage.
The powerful 533MHz MIPS32 74K core CPU memory subsystem architecture allows for consistently enhanced voice quality even under high Internet data traffic conditions.
Broadcom uses a 65nm CMOS design process and a high level of integration to reduce the number of system components on-chip, which in turn, lowers the rest-of-bill-of-materials cost by up to 35 percent. These new router SoC solutions further reduce cost by using two-layer PCBs, making high-end routers more affordable to consumers.
The new Intensi-fi XLR platform builds upon the architecture of Broadcom's current 802.11n platform, and maintains data rates of up to 300Mbit/s.
The new SoC solutions include interface to support 3G and 4G technologies including WiMAX and LTE (long term evolution) WAN connectivity. The router SoCs also pack integrated IEEE 802.11n CPU/MAC/BB/Radio, memory controller, five-port Fast Ethernet switch and 2.4GHz power amplification circuit. The solutions integrate USB 2.0 host port that can be used for storage and print server applications as well as Low-power modes for a green router footprint.
"By optimizing our wireless solutions for popular consumer use cases, Broadcom is able to address growing industry trends in wireless routers including support for external wide area wireless networking (3G, WiMAX and LTE) and the ability to run a high quality VoIP stack. This product family not only supports these two new features, but also provides best in class system integration and wireless performance," said Michael Hurlston, senior VP and general manager, Broadcom's WLAN line of business.

Warpia Easy Dock Spearheads the Wireless USB Revolution

Wires. Lame, right? Always getting tangled up, keeping you tethered to your desk. But! We've hit the age of wireless USB. Now Macbook and PC alike can connect cordlessly to any desktop setting through products like the Warpia Easy Dock.

We had some concerns over the InFocus wireless set-up that popped up last month, but Source R&D's Warpia Easy Dock seems to be a cleaner solution. Both products are built on Wisair's wireless USB technology, as will at least a few more similar offerings coming later this year.

Also appealing: the Easy Dock has plug-and-play functionality, and works across both PC and Macbook lines. Whether it's worth the $150 price tag depends on how much use you'll get out of it; I can certainly see the advantages in a professional setting, or for those with netbook regret who want a larger display to work with.

Source R&D Debuts Wireless Laptop Docking Station for Mac & PC Users

Easy Dock brings your laptop content to your desktop computing environment for convenient use of speakers, mouse, keyboard & external monitor

SAN JOSE, California, Mar. 9 – Source R&D announced today the availability of the Warpia Easy Dock, which will allow users to wirelessly connect their notebook/netbook/Macbook to any traditional desktop setting. With the Easy Dock's straightforward plug-and-play interface, consumers can have both the convenience and portability of a laptop, as well as the comfort of a desktop computer. Easier on the eyes, ears and hands, users will no longer have to squint at a miniature screen, deal with a below average sound quality, or fumble with a tiny keyboard.

Based on wireless technology from Wisair, a leading provider of single-chip based Wireless USB solutions, the Easy Dock consists of a USB dongle that connects to your laptop and a receiver that connects to your monitor, mouse, keyboard, and speakers. Your laptop will instantly recognize the dongle and begin submitting a wireless signal to the receiver, transmitting the image with a resolution of up to1400x1050 to your monitor's screen.

"Perfect for professionals working from home, students on-the-go, or families with both MacBook and PC laptops, the Easy Dock gives customers ultimate portability and comfort," says Marc Levaggi, VP of Marketing for Source R&D. "They can take their compact notebook to business meetings, while still having the option to do more intensive work at home with a full-size keyboard and monitor. It's also a great solution for those who want to play media on high quality speakers."

Compared to other laptop docks on the market, Easy Dock stands out for its wireless quality; adding capability without contributing to cable clutter. Priced affordably at $149.99, the Easy Dock and works with Windows 7, Vista, XP, Mac OS X Leopard, and Snow Leopard. For more information, please visit http://warpia.com/Product_Guide-Easy_Dock.pdf.

Sprint puts out fact sheet for dual-mode U301 WiMAX modem, release imminent?

So Sprint just published an official fact sheet for a U301 USB modem with support for both WiMAX and EV-DO -- it's not accompanied by any press release or product page on Sprint's online store, but we can only assume this means that a release is around the corner. Of course, the dual-mode capability alone doesn't set it apart -- the carrier's existing U300 model already handles those duties with aplomb -- but what seemingly sets the U301 apart is its support for Mac OS. We'd just as soon they'd release drivers for the U300, but failing that, alright, fine, we'll take a new modem. If we're sustaining over 3Mbps down, we'll take a lot of carrier and manufacturer abuse, actually.

Sierra Wireless intros Apex 880 USB HSUPA modem

Sierra Wireless sure doesn't seem to be skimping when it comes to USB HSUPA modems, with it now following up its recently-released 880U and 881U models with its new and somewhat improved Apex 880 modem. About the biggest addition here is an always useful microSD card slot, which should let you ditch at least one USB thumb drive from your bag. Otherwise, you'll get the same peak data speeds of 7.2 Mbps on the downlink and 2.0 Mpbs on the uplink as before, and support for tri-band UMTS and quad-band GSM/ EDGE networks to keep you connected at all times.
