The Advantages of Satellite Internet

by Maria Maloney

Have you thought about switching to satellite Internet? What are some advantages of this technology over the more traditional options of cable or DSL? There are two primary advantages that satellite has over cable, as well as many other features that are comparable to cable or DSL phone technology. Let's first consider the two primary advantages: mobility and availability.

The technology of satellite Internet is completely different from cable Internet technology. Cable operates via Cable Modem Termination System, which is housed at a cable operator facility. This is a different technology than satellite Internet, which communicates directly with a satellite in geostationary orbit. This means that with a satellite Internet connection, you can have Internet "on" constantly, and throughout the contiguous United States. You could surf the Internet all day even while crossing three states!

This makes satellite Internet ideal for RVers and boaters, who want an Internet connection wherever they go, but can't be tied down with local phone companies, cable companies or wireless providers. Furthermore, satellite Internet is available throughout more locations than any other Internet provider. In fact, this technology can work for 99% of houses in the United States. Cable companies and even cellular Internet companies require a user to be within a reasonable distance from the CMTS (or tower) in order to enjoy a stable Internet connection.

Are there any disadvantages to using satellite Internet? Not really. Satellite Internet is very much like cable in everything except when it comes technical differences. Satellite Internet is affordable and comes close to the prices of your typical cable Internet provider. Furthermore, satellite Internet companies offer satellite dish leasing options as well as free standard installation. Therefore, the idea that satellite Internet is complicated and expensive is an outdated one. Satellite companies want to compete with DSL and cable these days, and they couldn't very well compete unless they were offering similar programs and packages.

How about the speed of satellite Internet? The average satellite Internet speed can be anywhere from 512 KPS upload to 2 MBPS download. This compares evenly to cable Internet and DSL Internet. In order receive satellite Internet services you will need a clear view of the southern sky. This is the only physical requirement you must be aware of. You should also note that with some companies, in order to upload files, you will need an analog modem (a second modem in addition to your download). However, there are also satellite companies that offer a two-way satellite service, which allows uploading and downloading.

If you are interested in satellite services contact a local provider in your area. There are a variety of satellite companies to choose from. The great thing about satellite services are that you don't have to be in a particular region in order to get service started. Once you have your satellite connection up, you can travel across the U.S. and enjoy stable Internet capability. Satellite Internet is becoming increasingly popular in this day and age and promises to become more popular as satellite and digital services become part of everyday life.
