Ralink Technology Launches Integrated Wireless Cable Modem Gateway

Platform Includes Single-Chip 802.11n Router and Texas Instruments’ Next-Generation DOCSIS® 3.0 Puma 5 Cable Modem Technology

WASHINGTON -- Ralink Technology Corporation, a leading developer of high-performance wireless solutions, today announced that its RT3052 single-chip 802.11n Wi-Fi router has been optimized for deployment with Texas Instruments’ Puma 5 family of DOCSIS® 3.0 platform for cable modems, set-top boxes, gateways and video gateways.

The RT3052 is a highly integrated single-chip Wi-Fi router with firmware and interfaces optimized for TI’s high-speed Puma 5 DOCSIS3.0 gateway platform. This new platform delivers the industry-leading combination of 300Mbps Wi-Fi router performance and DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem technology required to support next-generation voice, video, and data services over wireless cable modem gateways.

The RT3052 single chip Wi-Fi router delivers 300Mbps throughput, and its embedded 384 MHz processor offloads WLAN-to-LAN packet conversion from TI’s Puma 5 chipset. This offload support improves WLAN performance by up to 30 percent and frees the Puma 5 host processor for other critical application tasks.

Ralink’s RT3052 single chip Wi-Fi router appears as a simple wired-ethernet connection to the Puma 5 processor, and with the industry’s highest level of integration, the RT3052 accelerates MSOs time-to-market with a cost-effective yet high-performance solution.

“The combination of Ralink’s advanced wireless networking capabilities and the high-speeds of DOCSIS 3.0 enabled by our Puma 5 chipsets allows cable manufacturers to support compelling next-generation services and develop a broad portfolio of differentiated products,” said Adam Lapede, director of marketing for TI’s digital connected home business.

“We welcome the addition of Ralink’s RT3052 single chip router’s advanced feature set and sophisticated integration into TI’s Puma 5 DOCSIS 3.0 cable ecosystem.”

Ralink’s RT3052 supports critical home-user functionality including Wi-Fi Protected Setup for a simple and secure out-of-the-box experience (WPS), wireless multimedia capabilities for prioritized quality of service (WMM and WMM-PS), and various home gateway protocols to shield consumers from the complexities of making an Internet connection.

The RT3052 chipset also delivers a variety of leading-edge radio and baseband processing techniques to improve wireless range and reliability including Maximum Likelihood Detection (MLD) and Maximal Ratio Combining (MRC).

“The need for advanced wireless home gateway solutions is growing as customers demand next-generation ‘triple play’ voice, video, and data services,” said Dave Borison, Sr. Director of Strategic Marketing at Ralink Technology. “The integration and performance level of Ralink’s RT3052 single chip router make it a perfect solution for this market segment.

We are pleased that Ralink’s cost-effective yet high-performance single chip Wi-Fi router has enabled Texas Instruments to rapidly introduce its next-generation of wireless cable modem gateways.”
