Apple Peel 520 to Come in iPad Edition

Yosion's Apple Peel 520 caught a bit of attention as it was a case that essentially brings along its own 3G modem to give the plain old iPod Touch voice and data capabilities over a mobile broadband network, turning the personal music player into an iPhone. Now, the company wants to head back into the game and tackle another popular Apple product, the iPad. The company will create a same case/sleeve contraption that should bring mobile broadband data to Apple's iPad tablet if you want to go with another carrier other than AT&T or whatever selected launch carrier partner for the device in your country. GoSolarUSA has confirmed that it is working to fund developments of the Apple Peel for your iPad, though I don't personally see a big market for that.

The need for a Peel for iPad to circumvent your carrier may not exist as the Apple iPad is already sold unsubsidized and unlocked, and in many cases without the need for a 3G data contract, so users can stop and start service as they need. On the other hand, because of AT&T's tight grip on the iPhone, those who may not want to sign a contract or pay a premium for an imported, SIM-unlocked iPhone that's being sold overseas can do well with an iPod Touch and Peel, which has been announced for to come to the U.S. via a distributer. The Peel's other function would be for users who may want to use it on a carrier that doesn't support Apple's products and may not be able to obtain the micro SIM to use with the device, though plenty have resorted to trimming their own standard SIM cards to a micro SIM size, and that method has been reported to work on both the latest iPhone 4 and the iPad.
The other use case scenario would be for people who purchased a WiFi-only model iPad and would want to add 3G mobile broadband access at a later time without having gotten the WiFi + 3G model initially.

Launch2Net Premium updates to v2.1, adds modems

Nova Media today announced a major update of its 3G connection manager for Mac, Launch2Net Premium, to v2.1, adding new support to 3G modems from Huawei and ZTE as well as updating its connection settings for other providers such as Novatel, Sierra Wireless, Sony Ericsson and Option. The program smoothes the connection process for Mac users who want to use a 3G modem to provide internet access, helps find local prepaid providers, keeps track of usage and includes an ability to create an ad-hoc wi-fi network so that non-3G devices can share the connection.
In addition, Launch2Net Premium features an SMS text message manager and support for VPN and prepaid connections, also improved in the new version. Users visiting a foreign country can quickly discover which providers can give them compatible pre-paid access, and can view detailed statistics on use in home and roaming situations, helping them to avoid billing errors or overage charges by keeping customers aware of how much 3G data they are using.

The v2.1 update is free to current users, and new copies may be purchased for $50 throughout North America (50€ elsewhere). Launch2Net Premium requires an Intel Mac running 10.5 or higher. A demo version is available.

ViaSat and EM Solutions – COTM Confidence

ViaSat Inc. has successfully demo’d full-mesh satellite communications at Ka-band between an Australian Army deployable 1.0-metre Compact Transmit Receive Suite (CTRS) terminal located at the Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO) and a 48-cm communication-on-the-move(COTM) terminal located at BAE Systems Australia using a ViaSat LinkWayS2(tm) MF-TDMA satellite modem.
This demo further shows the ability of the LinkWayS2 modem to simultaneously support satellite communications with fixed site, at-the-halt, and on-the-move terminals within a single tactical LinkWay® network. The full-duplex mesh connection streamed high-definition video simultaneously in both directions between remote sites while the mobile satcom antenna was exercised on a multi-axis, full motion platform using the steerable Ka-band spot beam on the Optus C1 satellite. The LinkWayS2 master reference terminal for the demonstration originated from a fixed terminal with a DVB-S overlay sourced from another Ka transponder on Optus C1. The LinkWay full-mesh communication system has been a satellite networking workhorse for U.S. defense over many years and with the addition of this new COTM capability, will increase its ability to provide network-centric operations, particularly over the Wideband Global Satcom (WGS) constellation. The COTM antenna was designed and developed as a concept technology demonstrator by EM Solutions Pty Limited based in Brisbane, Australia, under contract to DSTO and has been successfully tested on an Australian Bushmaster Personnel Mobility Vehicle (PMV).

How To Use 3TB Hard Drives On Windows XP

All hard drive manufacturers have announced the first wave of 3TB (that’s 3 Terabytes) hard drives in the first half of 2010, and first 3TB hard drives like the Western Digital Caviar Green WD30EZRSDTL 3TB are now available.
These high capacity hard drives will work fine for users running Windows Vista, Windows 7 or a Windows Server 2008 operating system. Windows XP users will however notice that they cannot use all of the space of the hard drive. Why? Because the operating system cannot address disk space beyond the 2 Terabyte limit. That’s roughly one third of space that cannot be used.
An alternative is an advanced partitioning scheme like GUID Partition Table (GPT) which can support 3TB volumes. The problem however is that GPT is not supported by Windows XP.
Paragon however came up with a solution. They basically create a specially signed driver to make Windows XP compatible with the GPT partitioning scheme. With this in place, Windows XP users can utilize the full storage of 3TB hard drives.
There are a few limitations though, but the solution nevertheless is the only available one to use all 3 Terabytes of hard drive space on Windows XP. The major limitation of this method is that the 3TB hard drive cannot be the system partition. The full 3 Terabytes are only available if the hard drive is installed as a secondary drive. Other limitations include incompatibility with RAID setups and external 3TB hard drives.
paragon gpt loader
After installation and reboot of the system the GPT partitioning scheme needs to be created on the 3 Terabyte drive. This is done by clicking on Hard Disk in the menubar and selecting Convert to GPT hard disk from the context menu.
Full access to all 3 Terabytes is provided afterwards. It is then possible to use Windows tools to manage the hard drive, or the Paragon GPT Disk Manager. The disk manager offers options to partition the hard drive among other features.

Paragon GPT Loader Download and Compatibility

Paragon GTP Loader is currently available free of charge as part of Paragon’s Early Adopter program. The program has been developed for Windows XP, and users of other Microsoft operating systems have no benefit of running the software (as their systems support 3TB drives). The Paragon GTP Loader download link will be sent to the email address used in the registration for the early adopters program. The same email contains a link to the product guide in pdf format.

Netflix Will Clobber U.S. Internet Bandwidth

Thanks to a study just released, some sources are theorizing that Netflix, the streaming video service, could have the potential to dominate the internet and gobble up American broadband

Netflix currently boasts over 15 million members and according to network management company Sandvine, their 2010 Global Internet Phenomena Report indicates that Netflix accounts for 20 percent of downstream traffic during peak periods beating out YouTube, iTunes, Hulu, and p2p file-sharing

The spike in online streaming video users for Netflix appears to have originated from customers in Canada.  The company's traditional DVD-by-mail service was not offered as an option to consumers there, they were only provided with the choice of streaming video.

In the week following the launch of service to Canadians, 10 percent of Netflix online usage came from that country and video streaming usage numbers will continue to increase in Canada and are expected to rise exponentially in North America overall, according to Sandvine.

In response to the study, one online report suggests that another reason that Netflix may be gaining momentum could stem from the fact that while online users spend only moments at a time on YouTube, they tend to spend hours at a time on Netflix.

Despite growing suggestions that Netflix will stretch broadband capacity to the limit during peak hours, the co-founder of Akamai -- the company that boasts 77,000 servers with hard drives and is responsible for Netflix delivery of content with local servers -- reports that no one should be concerned about a surge of streaming video crashing the internet.

"That video is growing rapidly and going to be huge is true," said Akamai's Tom Leighton. "But there's tons of capacity out at the edges of the network....plenty of capacity in the last mile to your house."

Netflix retrying its Social TV strategy

Netflix retries its Social TV strategy just after two months, when they shut down their community features. The reason for this new retry is the evangelism by Facebook's CEO Marck Zuckerberg, "of a world in which every industry must fundamentally become social or risk becoming irrelevant".
Mike Hart, Director of engineering for APIs at Netflix told FastCompany:
“It’s very nascent, as of a couple days ago. We’re entering a bunch of new markets, internationally. There will be less brand recognition, less word of mouth. So viral acquisition strategies have the potential to gain for us endless new markets.
“[Zuckerberg] firmly believes that all the surviving services, the leaders in their spaces in the next decade, will be social through-and-through. We think it’s worth a bet to invest in that kind of vision to realize bigger gains for the business as well as to protect us from potential disrupters entering our space and leveraging those types of technologies.”
Difference in strategy
The old social strategy by Netflix was a limited version, embedded in ideas of community that predates current state of the Web, which expressed itself in sharing tools for the users' recommendationsand reviews. The new strategy though is based upon the diffusion of social networks-like Facebook- which fundamentally changes the way how companies market their products and the opportunities of co-creational marketing.

Morning Chit Chat: Netflix & Night Out

Will Netflix Destroy the Internet?

Netflix began offering its streaming movie service in Canada. This was Netflix's first venture outside of the United States, and because the company wasn't offering its traditional DVD-by-mail plan to Canadians, its prospects seemed questionable. How many people would pay $7.99 per month (Canadian) for the chance to watch Superbad whenever they wanted?
A lot, it turns out. According to Sandvine, a network management company that studies Internet traffic patterns, 10 percent of Canadian Internet users visited Netflix.com in the week after the service launched. And they weren't just visiting—they were signing up and watching a lot of movies. Netflix videos quickly came to dominate broadband lines across Canada, with Netflix subscribers' bandwidth usage doubling that of YouTube users.*
It's not just Canada. Netflix is swallowing America's bandwidth, too, and it probably won't be long before it comes for the rest of the world. That's one of the headlines from Sandvine's Fall 2010 Global Internet Phenomena Report, an exhaustive look at what people around the world are doing with their Internet lines. According to Sandvine, Netflix accounts for 20 percent of downstream Internet traffic during peak home Internet usage hours in North America. That's an amazing share—it beats that of YouTube, iTunes, Hulu, and, perhaps most tellingly, the peer-to-peer file-sharing protocol BitTorrent, which accounts for a mere 8 percent of bandwidth during peak hours. It wasn't long ago that pundits wondered if the movie industry would be sunk by the same problems that submarined the music industry a decade ago—would we all turn away from legal content in favor of downloading pirated movies and TV shows? Three or four years ago, as BitTorrent traffic surged, that seemed likely. Today, though, Netflix is far bigger than BitTorrent, and it seems sure to keep growing.
Sandvine has been publishing annual reports on broadband usage since 2002. When you study previous editions, you notice that Netflix's dominance over BitTorrent fits into a larger story about how our Internet use is changing. Over time, we've shifted away from "asynchronous" applications toward "real-time" apps. Every year, that is, we're using more of our bandwidth to download stuff we need right now, and less for stuff we need later. Sandvine's 2008 report (PDF) showed that all the applications that saw big increases in traffic were dependent on real-time access: online gaming, Internet telephone programs like Skype, instant messaging, Web video, and "placeshifting" devices like Slingbox that let you watch TV shows you record on the Internet. Peer-to-peer file-sharing is asynchronous; you spend hours downloading a movie or game that you'll watch or play later. In Sandvine's 2008 report, peer-to-peer use was essentially unchanged from the previous year. By 2009, peer-to-peer traffic had declined by 25 percent (PDF).
That makes sense—once we come to expect immediate access to videos, BitTorrent's download-now, watch-later model seems outdated. That's what happened for me. In a column last spring, I admitted my affection for illegally downloading movies and TV using BitTorrent. I had what I thought was a good excuse for going over to the dark side—there wasn't a good way to get movies and TV shows legally online. Yes, Netflix offered a streaming service called Watch Instantly, but I wrote that the company's streaming service "often feels like Settle-For Instantly, since many of the titles are of the airline-movie variety."
In the last 18 months, though, Netflix has gotten much better in two main ways. First, it signed deals with TV networks and movie distributors that let it add a lot more movies and shows. It certainly doesn't have everything—or even most things—that I want, but I rarely feel like I'm wasting my time watching garbage. Second, Netflix's streaming service is now available on a wide range of devices—you can watch with your computer, iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Blu-ray and DVD players, Wii, PlayStation 3, Xbox, and a range of Web-connected TVs. This is one of my favorite things about Netflix: I can start a movie on my TV, watch a bit of it later on my PC, and then finish it on my iPad before bed. Every time I switch to a new device, the video starts right where I left off. No other movie-delivery system—not DVDs, not BitTorrent, not iTunes, not Hulu—allow for this kind of flexibility. And as long as Netflix keeps expanding its library and the number of devices you can get it on, I don't see how it can lose.
Well, maybe there is one dark cloud: Will there be enough available bandwidth for Netflix to keep growing? Wired.com's Ryan Singel points out that in the hours when Netflix hits 20 percent of broadband use, it's being used by just under 2 percent of Netflix subscribers. That stat has huge implications for how ISPs manage their lines. If 2 percent of Netflix customers account for one-fifth of the traffic on North American broadband lines, what will happen when more and more Netflixers begin to watch movies during peak times?*
The outcome might actually not be that dire. Theoretically, broadband capacity isn't fixed—as people begin using bandwidth-hogging services like Netflix more often, they'll subscribe to faster Internet lines, and that will push ISPs to build out their capacity. Still, as I've pointed out in the past, American broadband is pretty crummy. Unlike in other countries, our Internet plans haven't been getting faster, cheaper, and more widespread. In a presentation that it published online earlier this year, Netflix predicted that its shipments of DVDs would peak in 2013—after that, the number of discs it sends out will begin to decline. The future of Netflix, then, is the Internet. It's an open question whether the Internet can keep up.

Is Google the Right Partner for Netflix?

I know you're getting sick of all of the "Company X might buy Netflix" rumors, but in a recent Forbes story (Goole Buying Netflix Just Makes Sense), Darcy Travlos wonders if Netflix is a killer app and a good fit for Google:
A well-capitalized company with global presence and distribution could provide greater resources to build out its business (Netflix's net cash position is $20 million) and could facilitate Netflix’s accelerated penetration of these new markets and enhance value faster.
In the battle for customer loyalty across an ecosystem (phones, tablet, laptops, desktops, televisions) of devices and geographies, Netflix is an attractive acquisition target. Surveying the battlefield, Netflix would fit best with Google’s strategy. Netflix is forecast to have higher growth and therefore has a higher price-earnings ratio than Google and, therefore, should be well received by investors.
Netflix CEO Reed Hastings eventually wants the majority of revenue to come from other countries, and a partner with deep pockets like Google could help them expand internationally at a much faster pace.

Is Netflix too popular for the internet to handle?

Netflix's streaming service is flat-out awesome. It lets you stream movies and TV shows to your TV, computer, phone or iPad, all for a pretty cheap monthly fee. The problem? It may be too awesome. We knew that they sucked up 20% of internet traffic, but did you kow that it's a mere 2% of Netflix customers accounting for all that bandwidth?
So the question is this: is it sustainable? As more people join Network and current customers use the service more and more, can the backbone of the internet keep up? That's what Farhad Manjoo asks over at Slate, and he makes some interesting points. But hopefully, as more people get faster broadband plans in order to enjoy streaming services such as Netflix, ISPs will build out their networks in order to handle the demand.

Stream Content From Netflix To Your Windows Phone 7 Device

"Today, Netflix announced that its WP7 app is now live and ready to download. As with the Netflix apps for other platforms, the WP7 version is totally free and will allow you to watch streaming content on your device."

Well, there you have it. The venerable Netflix movie service is officially ready to stream content right to your new Windows Phone 7 device. The app is free and is available on the Zune Marketplace. Personally, I'm not a movie watcher on these smaller devices. I do enjoy watching short video clips such as those on YouTube, but I have yet to feel the urge to download and watch a full-length movie. I do own an Archos media player (with a 4.3" screen), that I have watched movies on, and enjoyed that a fair bit, but my current smartphone has a 3.7" screen and it just seems too small. I'd be interested in your opinion and thoughts. Do you watch movies on your smartphone device? Is this Netflix app something that you'd take advantage of?

How to Stream Netflix Movies and TV Shows to Sony PlayStation 3 Without Disc

How to Stream Netflix Movies and TV Shows to Sony PlayStation 3 Without Disc. PlayStation 3 is not just a game console. Many other functions were built-in inside this game console made by Sony. One of the functions is to watch movies and TV shows online. To do so, we could use an app named Netflix, made by Netflix Inc. Few days ago, Netflix Inc. has announced that their subscribers who use their Sony PlayStation 3 to stream movies and TV shows, now they are able to do so without inserting disc, where actually we should use the Netflix disc to be able to do so. And now, PlayStation 3 users also will get Dolby 5.1-channel surround sound as well.
Now PS 3 owners are able to download a brand new Netflix app to use the feature Watch Instantlyâ without inserting a special disc from Netflix. The app will also make it possible to hear the streaming video in surround-sound using Dolby Digital Plus from Dolby Laboratories Inc. of San Francisco. This is a the first time for Netflix, which gives a vision about online streaming as the future of digital home entertainment.

Netflix itself, which rents video delivered by mail or online, brought streaming to the PS3 about a year ago, but the users will have to always use a special disc they received in the mail. Nintendo Wii console owners also got the same requirement to do so, but not with Xbox 360, or the other of Netflix-enabled devices like iPad TiVo, Apple TV, or PC.
Recently many users complained about the quality they received from streaming without disc. While the resolution of the streamed video will remain at 720p, compared with the 1080p available on a Blu-ray disc, improving the audio is still an important piece of that home entertainment evolution. Dolby Senior Marketing Director, John Griffin, said that Dolby Labs found a way to provide up to 7.1 channels of surround-sound audio without taking up too much bandwidth or causing glitches or delays. As Griffin stated “any user that has a reasonable broadband connection shouldn’t notice any issues. Dolby has been focused for a year now on elevating the consumer experience.”

Best Quality Conference Calls Can Help Your Business

Getting the best or highest quality conference call depends on several factors. Among the most complaints from conference call users are:

- Can’t get through to the dial-in number and get busy signals or dead air.

- Static on the line.

- Poor quality transmission including breaks in the conversation.

- Echoes

- Bleeding or hearing conversations of other conference calls.

Optimizing and getting the best or highest quality conference calls can be accomplished by:

- Choosing a reasonably priced conference call company that has a reputation for quality and service. In the conference call world you get what you pay for. There are free conference call services but unfortunately there are times when the long distance carriers do not deliver calls to those services and block users. It is against the law, but it happens.

- Using a landline and a long distance company that uses fiber-optic transmission. Quality can be degraded by using cell phones which may simply have bad connections, or phones that are on digital VOIP cable connections. The vast majority of conference bridges are analog, and incoming digital calls may be difficult to handle. There are “VOIP friendly” conference bridges that you can use, but still, there can be problems when merging the analog and digital technologies. The easy solution is just to have everyone call the conference from an old fashioned landline. If that’s not possible, the second best alternative is to use a cell phone with a good connection. And lastly, a phone with a digital cable connection.

- Using the mute function for participants. This not only eliminates annoying background noise (co-workers, fire sirens, dogs barking, etc.) but also eliminates noises from bad connections. Conference leaders (also called hosts or moderators) can call into the conference using a separate passcode and have the ability to automatically mute the participants (also called conferees or guests) by pressing a specified code on their phone’s keypad during the conference. If you have a call with say, 10 people, and 3 of those 10 people will be doing most of the talking, those 3 people can call in on the moderator passcode and the other 7 people can be automatically muted. And remember, participants can certainly mute themselves as well, and many phones have a mute button.

Just taking those three actions will significantly improve the quality of your calls. If your business or organization success depends on making a good impression, then you’ll want to make sure you have the highest and best quality conferences available.

7 powerful techniques for Your Business Using Conference Calling Services Free Or teleseminar

There are many ways to develop this business for specific areas. However, they generally into 4 categories of activity. To grow your business, you can generate more prospects, increase the percentage of conversions from prospects to clients, increase average revenue per transaction, or increase the value of clients through the purchase of a lifetime again.
Each common way to create value can be implemented using the strategy of a good tele-seminars. In the following section, I will share with you some simple business growth strategy of free conference calling services and tele-seminars.

1. Membership Products

Every business that develops a way to engineer recurring profits rather than episodic, transactional profits becomes more stable and more profitable. Monthly, quarterly, or annual membership programs are a great way to incorporate recurring profits into your business design.

You can turn your free conference calling line into a powerful engine for profits by targeting a particular set of highly dynamic customer problems for continuous treatment, sharing access with member.

2. Information Publishing Profit Center

Similar to the “member-only” model above, you can turn your free conference calls into an information publishing profit center by recording your calls (also part of these free services) and packaging them as physical products (Audio CDs and Multi-CD packages).

3. Virtual Work Teams and Collaboration

The power of virtual collaboration and virtual work teams in today’s business environment cannot be overstated. Whether you create your business design to include outsource workers and virtual assistants, or whether you want to partner with other organizations, free conference calling services help every small (and very small) business to be more partner-able.

4. Turn-key Lead Nurturing Systems

Free conference calling services with recording and syndication capability allow creative entrepreneurs to incorporate “quick and dirty” lead nurturing systems to help convert more leads into sales and compress the sales conversion cycle when you deal with your most highly valued prospects.

This is easily implemented by linking an email capture marketing system or offline direct marketing campaign with your archive of recorded (or live) audios in systematic sequence.

5. Content marketing and Syndication Online

Online content marketing is one of the most under-recognized and under-utilized strategies among small business of all kinds. Everyone from manufacturers to local service professionals and retail firms stand to gain tremendously from strategic content marketing online.

Free conference calling services like FreeConferenceCallingOnline.com provide ways to syndicate your content through podcast directories and RSS feed capabilities.

6. Direct mail & Email marketing List Bait

By targeting specific problems of specific market segments for your audio content, you can create tremendously valuable “bait” audios to help you invite the right people into your email marketing lists. You can also get those audios transcribed into “Special Reports” that you can use for list bait in direct mail and direct marketing campaigns.

This is a convenient strategy for generating more leads and conversions through direct marketing campaigns.

7. Service Professional Value-Add

Any professional service firm from lawyer, accountant and marketing consultants to graphic designers can use free conference calling services to add cyber-coaching or consulting add-ons to their business. I have coached even marriage counselors into expanding their marketplace with virtual counseling using these tools.

T-Mobile's "4G" (HSPA+) Network Now in 75 Areas With Two New Devices

With 75 new areas now have access to T-Mobile's HSPA+ service, you want a "4G" with the device for use with network facilities. T-Mobile myTouch 4G and Dell Inspiron Mini 10 4G netbook are available from today, but you'd have to be pretty crazy to pass up the G2.
BELLEVUE, Wash. - Nov. 2, 2010 - T-Mobile USA, Inc. today announced the expansion of its 4G mobile broadband network to six additional metro areas, and introduced two new products designed to tap into its 4G service. Tomorrow marks the national retail availability of the
T-Mobile® myTouch® 4G and T-Mobile's first 4G netbook, the Dell™ Inspiron™ Mini 10 4G. With typical download speeds that are on par with or faster than competing 4G technologies, and service availability in 75 metropolitan markets throughout the United States, the T-Mobile network now offers a super-fast, next generation mobile broadband experience to more people than any other wireless network in the country.

"4G is about performance and today T-Mobile's HSPA+ network is delivering 4G speeds that match and often beat WiMAX and are readily comparable to what early LTE will deliver. Our 4G network is capable of theoretical speeds up to 21Mbps and we have seen average download speeds approaching 5 Mbps on our myTouch 4G phone in some cities with peak speeds of nearly 12 Mbps. Further, independent reviewers have seen average download speeds on our webConnect Rocket between 5 and 8 Mbps with peak speeds up to 8-10Mbps," said Neville Ray, chief technology officer, T-Mobile USA. "The footprint of our 4G service is not something that competitors are going to match anytime soon, and starting today, we will begin marketing our network advantage with TV commercials advertising ‘America's Largest 4G Network' from T-Mobile."
The "America's Largest 4G Network" message will be communicated in an iconic, arresting and memorable way through national TV and digital advertisements that will begin airing today on major TV networks and cable TV stations, including ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC and TNT, and appearing on websites, including AOL, MSN, Amazon.com and easily viewable on T-Mobile's YouTube channel at http://www.youtube.com/tmobile.
T-Mobile expanded the availability of its 4G network to six additional metropolitan areas, including Chicago, Ill.; Colorado Springs, Colo.; Ft. Wayne, Ind.; Louisville, Ky.; and Raleigh-Durham and Wilmington, N.C. T-Mobile customers with 4G devices in 75 metropolitan areas can now enjoy faster Web browsing, uninterrupted video streaming and quicker downloads at no additional cost.
"Consumers do not understand the technical alphabet soup of technologies involved in 4G, but for our purposes we define WiMAX, LTE and HSPA+ as 4G technologies," said Chris Nicoll, distinguished research fellow, Yankee Group. "HSPA+ is evolving a far more ambitious and long-term road map than was originally envisioned. T-Mobile is using an upgrade to HSPA+ to deliver faster 4G speeds today and is quickly bringing a number of HSPA+ devices to market that greatly enhance the mobile data experience for its customers."
In addition to the network expansion, T-Mobile continues to broaden its lineup of products that tap into its 4G network. Available today is the stylish and powerful T-Mobile myTouch 4G smartphone. Designed to access faster speeds on T-Mobile's 4G network, the myTouch 4G also includes a front-facing camera for Video Chat through Yahoo! Messenger or QIK, HD Camcorder with Screen Share by Twonky™, 5-megapixel camera with flash, Android 2.2, and additional exclusive T-Mobile features such as Genius Button™, powered by Dragon Dictation from Nuance Communications, myModes and Faves Gallery™. The myTouch 4G is appearing in a national ad campaign beginning today and will be the featured device at T-Mobile retail stores nationwide this holiday season. Also available today is the Dell Inspiron Mini 10 4G, T-Mobile's first netbook to feature built-in access to T-Mobile's 4G mobile broadband network. It also includes Windows 7 Starter Edition - Microsoft Corp.'s latest operating system - and a fast processor for easy Web surfing, communication, photo sharing and multimedia playback in one small, ultraportable device.
"With an upgrade path that continues to provide room for considerable speed enhancements, T-Mobile's 4G network is purpose-built for continued growth. We are now on pace to increase our 4G footprint - reaching 200 million people by the end of this year - with plans to offer 42Mbps theoretical speeds in 2011," added Ray. "As customer demand for wireless data increases, T-Mobile is well-positioned to compete based on the speed, breadth and evolution path of our mobile broadband service."
Additional 4G products already available from T-Mobile and designed to take advantage of the faster 4G service include the T-Mobile webConnect® Rocket™ 2.0 laptop stick and the high-powered T-Mobile G2™ with Google™ smartphone. T-Mobile's 4G smartphones, the myTouch 4G and the T-Mobile G2, are powered by the Android 2.2 operating system, which provides tethering and Wi-Fi Sharing capabilities. Beginning this holiday season, T-Mobile will offer a Tethering and Wi-Fi Sharing service plan that allows customers to use their smartphone as wireless modem for connecting laptops and other devices to the Internet through the T-Mobile mobile broadband network. Billion BiPAC 7800N

Billion has long had a soft spot in the heart of enthusiasts, as the company that brought us low cost routers that didn't sacrifice in quality. While typically the haunt of the advanced user, Billion maintains its reputation for stability with the 7800N.

Specs at a glance

Firmware tested 1.05
ADSL2+ modem Yes
Annex M Yes
3G modem No
Wireless protocols 802.11b/g/n
Highest wireless security WPA2
WDS Yes

The 7800N sits above the norm by offering gigabit Ethernet ports and interestingly, a WAN port. Unlike many consumer routers, Billion has chosen not to include USB ports for print sharing or storage — perhaps because usually they are rife with compatibility problems and cause more frustration than joy.

UI and features

Billion's range has never been one for beginners, and the 7800N only goes a small way to make networking easier for the beginner. WPS is disabled by default, and although it has "Basic" and "Advanced" modes in the web user interface (UI), all Basic does is hide the majority of options.
Thankfully, there is a "Quick start" link that will walk the user through the necessary steps to get online and set up wireless, but it makes no effort whatsoever to explain to the user what each setting does.
Billion 7800N UI The UI is split into two versions, "Basic" and "Advanced". Basic isn't so much basic as just displays limited options. Check out Port Forward for more screenshots. (Screenshot by CBS Interactive)
As we've come to expect from Billion, there are options aplenty once you enter the advanced mode. On top of the expected features like a DHCP server (with fixed hosts) and port forwarding, it supports IP aliasing, allows tweaking of transmission power, can schedule when the wireless is available, has URL filtering, an in-built firewall (covering packet filtering and Ethernet/wireless MAC filtering), QoS settings, dynamic DNS support and, interestingly, can even set up VLANs across its Ethernet ports.

Performance

After analysing the spectrum with InSSIDer, an empty channel of either 1, 6 or 11 is chosen for 2.4GHz wireless testing. The router is restricted to the 20MHz band and will only allow 802.11n clients. If possible, the MCS is set to 15.
We use iperf to determine throughput, running eight streams, with a TCP window size of 1MB, and an interval of one second. The test is run for five minutes in three different locations, on two separate occasions. The locations are in the same room as the router, one floor down around spiral stairs and with concrete walls and floors, and two floors down under the same conditions.
The wireless throughput is tested using three chipsets, the Atheros AR5008X, RaLink RT2870 and Intel 5100AGN, then all results are averaged.

2.4GHz throughput (in Mbps)

  • Billion BiPAC 7800N
  • Linksys WAG320N (2.4GHz)
  • Asus DSL-N13
  • NetComm 3G15Wn
  • Location one (same room, no obstructions) 69.2065.9765.1761.43
  • Location two (one floor down, some obstructions) 64.6354.3753.4350.90
  • Location three (two floors down, some obstructions) 38.2335.2729.7325.45
(Longer bars indicate better performance)
ADSL performance is simply measured by the sync speed on an Internode ADSL2+ connection to the St Leonards exchange, on Internode's very high speed profile. If the connection remains stable over a period of time, the sync speed is recorded.

ADSL2+ sync speed (in Kbps)

  • Billion BiPAC 7800N
  • Linksys WAG320N (2.4GHz)
  • Asus DSL-N13
  • NetComm 3G15Wn
  • Uplink 1349134213461349
  • Downlink 22306225792192122172
(Longer bars indicate better performance)
As far as ADSL2+ performance is concerned, all are very close, and during subjective testing maintained a stable link.

Power consumption

We measured power consumption using a Jaycar mains digital power meter. It's important to note here that due to limitations of the meter, measurements are limited to values 1W and greater, and are reported in 1W increments.
The wireless radio was turned on, and an iperf test begun for measurement, using one wireless client and one wired.
Juice Box
Transmitting 9W
Idle 7W
Nothing out of the ordinary here — this is pretty standard consumption for a modem/router.

Warranty

A 24-month warranty is offered on all Billion products, and is covered by PCRange, Billion's distributor in Australia.

Conclusion

While some ADSL2+ modem/routers we've tested prefer one chipset over another, the Billion 7800N provided the most consistent results across all three of our test platforms, netting it the highest average throughput of the modem/routers we've seen so far. While we'd love to see 5GHz capability in the device, we can highly recommend this to anyone looking for the core of their new ADSL2+-based network.

Huawei Pays Option To Go Away

We’ve been closely following a trade dispute between Option N.V. and Huawei Technologies Co., because it shows how the global expansion plans of Chinese firms are being threatened by complaints that the Chinese government unfairly subsidizes its exporters.
These disputes usually end in tariffs being placed on Chinese firms. But in this case Huawei and Option last week announced a “cooperation agreement.” Under it, Option, a small Belgian wireless-technology company, would drop three trade complaints filed with the European Commission claiming that Huawei and ZTE Corp., the two main Chinese telecommunications equipment makers, have been able to flood the European Union market with cheap modems due to massive subsidies they receive from the Chinese government.
What the companies didn’t mention is that the dispute was about to yield fruit for Option: Two days earlier, the European Commission, the EU’s executive arm, had circulated a confidential document proposing to place steep duties on wireless modems shipped from China.
The document, obtained by Real Time Brussels, proposes duties of €32.95 for each of the first 10.7 million modems shipped from China and €59.10 for each modem after that. Those are enormous tariffs for a product that typically costs €20-30.
The duties would have lasted for 200 days - enough time for the commission to complete investigations the two other trade complaints brought by Option and impose duties that could last up to five years.
That may explain why Huawei gave Option such a good deal: Huawei agreed to pay €8 million for M4S, an Option subsidiary that’s developing next-generation mobile broadband technology, and up to €33 million over the next 18 months to license some of Option’s software technology.
To put that in perspective, €41 million roughly equaled Option’s market capitalization the day before the deal was announced.
“In the spirit of the future collaboration,” Option said it would drop the three trade complaints it had filed with the commission.
So, Huawei agreed to pay nearly enough to buy Option (judged by its share price) without receiving its main assets, including its headquarters in Leuven, Belgium, a factory in China and a factory in Cork, Ireland.
Unless you consider that these trade complaints may have been among Option’s most valuable assets, at least from Huawei’s perspective. For Huawei, the value of stopping Option’s complaints extends far beyond the market for wireless modems. European labor unions are growing increasingly concerned about Huawei’s penetration of the European market for network infrastructure equipment, which dwarfs the market for wireless modems. If the commission imposes tariffs on one kind of Huawei product, others could be next.

Qualcomm snaps up LTE modem designer Sandbridge

purchased LTE chip house Sandbridge Technologies, according to a report from Forward Concepts analyst Will Strauss.
Strauss said Qualcomm did not announce the deal, which he said is rumored to be around $55 million, because it does not represent a material change to Qualcomm's finances. A Qualcomm spokeswoman declined to comment.
Sandbridge, which was founded in 2001, designed a multi-core processor that can be used for LTE baseband technology. However, Strauss said Sandbridge failed to get a major design win, so the deal is primarily for patents and intellectual property. According to Castile Ventures, an investor in Sandbridge, the company was acquired by a "large public company," but the identity of the acquirer was not disclosed. Sandbridge's website is no longer functioning.

The deal is notable in light of Intel's recent acquisition of Infineon's wireless unit. Infineon recently purchased Blue Wonder Communications, a German LTE specialist. Infineon and Blue Wonder have been working together for the past 18 months on developing LTE baseband solutions.
Qualcomm Europe President Andrew Gilbert told Reuters that the company is not worried about Intel's purchase of Infineon's wireless unit. "The acquisition ... proves we are on the right track with our strategy," he said, noting the expected growth in mobile broadband over the next few years will continue to fuel the wireless industry.
Gilbert also said Qualcomm wants to expand in Europe, either organically or through acquisitions. He did not name any specific targets but told the German newspaper Sueddeutsche Zeitung that "Germany is the biggest telecommunications market in Europe and therefore it is very important to us."

Results of extensive modem performance testing

I'm a radiofrequency engineer by training and am involved in the RF power amplifier community (our company delivers WiMAX PAs), so I was very interested in getting away from FiOS and on to Clear.

I live nearly equidistant from two Clear towers in NW suburban Portland, 0.7mi and 0.45mi from the towers. I initially took two subscriptions to Clear so I could run both simultaneously and determine which tower would give me better service.

The answer was neither. Two Motorola modems, two placements in windows on second floor of house, no difference in performance. After trying all kinds of "home remedies" to improve modem performance, I recently swapped out a Motorola CPE 25150 for a new Series G modem by Gemtek.

I had an interesting learning from all this effort that I think is worth sharing with the Clear community. In the modem location where the Motorola modem has its best performance (1-3 lights using the tower east of house, 0.7mi away), the Series G modem now gives 4-5 lights. However, in the best location for the west tower (0.45mi away through dense suburban trees and houses), the Motorola modem gives 1-2 lights while the Series G modem gives only 1 light. I tested this in another location in the house where Clear signal is weak, again the Motorola modem outperformed the Series M modem.

For me, the most surprising part was the significant improvement between the Series M modem and the Motorola modem in the location with best line-of-sight to the eastern tower.

I will also say that, after running two Motorola modems from different antennas, in weak signal conditions it improves speed to reset the modem daily. You can do this by typing 192.168.15.1 into your web browser while connected to the modem. After logging in with password "motorola", you can reset the modem by clicking the starbright logo in the lower left corner of the information display. I have noticed that weak variable signal conditions seem to cause the modem to, using a very non-technical term, "block up" and degrade in performance. I've seen a reset take 0.5-0.75 Mbps performance up to 1.5-2 Mbps with the same RF signal power level.

It's time for Clear to start shipping indoor modems with external antenna compatibility. A very simple external antenna will outperform the slot antennas built into the modem circuit board and be less sensitive to the physical orientation of the modem.
